Myofascial Release & Pelvicology For Chronic Pain

Lesley’s Philosophy

Myofascial Release & MFR Pelvicolgy requires a keen understanding of Human anatomy. It also requires an open channel of communication between the therapist and the client. This reliable and ongoing communication is necessary for successful treatment. I strongly believe in providing a therapeutic space that is private, safe and confidential. It is also why I recently took an updated, 40-hour course in Pelvic Health Sex Counseling. I recognize the individuality of each client and personalize treatment to fit their specific needs, both physical and emotional.

As a former teacher and Acute Rehabilitation nurse, I realize that an important part of my treatment process involves educating the patient regarding their specific problems. With this in mind, I give them copies of each treatment session. These handouts contain charts and notes explaining what has been done and how well the treatment is progressing. This, along with discussions regarding their progress, helps them understand and track their recovery.

What is Fascia?

As John F Barnes, PT, the founder of the Myofascial Release method explains it: “The fascia is a specialized system of the body that has an appearance similar to a spider’s web. Facia is very densely woven, covering and interpenetrating nearly every muscle, bone, nerve, artery and veins as well as our internal organs.”

What is Myofascial Release?

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a gentle, hands-on technique, that provides sustained pressure into myofascial restrictions in the body to help eliminate pain and restore motion. The practice of MFR requires an understanding of the fascial (connective tissue) system. MFR can be applied in any direction using a cross-hand technique to stretch the elastic component of the fascia.

What is MFR Pelvicology?

Pelvicology is the term used to refer to the use of Myofascial Release techniques to unlock the internal fascia of the pelvic floor. Releasing the fascia in the pelvis leads to core stabilization. This work also relieves low back, SI, hip-flexor and coccyx pain. Further, it will improve pelvic support, bowel, and bladder problems, as well as sexual dysfunction and pain.
